Five deserving Tasmanian family carers have been given a day of luxury and respite in the lead up to Carers Week 2014, with a free pampering and fashion styling session courtesy of Northgate Shopping Centre, as part of its October Fashion campaign.
Northgate retail marketing manager Ashlea Hey said it was wonderful to be able to treat the carers to a well-deserved day of respite, providing a little break from looking after another’s needs to put their feet up and relax.
“Everyone needs a bit of retail therapy and TLC every now and then, and Northgate is excited to be able to support Carers Tasmania, which provides the important service of ensuring those who care for our more vulnerable members of the community are also being supported,” she said.
Chair of the Board of Carers Tasmania Jenny Branch-Allen said caring for a loved one was often very emotionally taxing and physically draining.
“Carers Week this year is being held from 12 – 18 October, and is designed to highlight the fantastic work family carers do in Tasmania.
“This year’s theme “Take a Break for Carers” and the work Northgate is doing to pamper our deserving carers is a great example of giving back and providing a break for a selfless group of people.
“Family carers have the lowest wellbeing of any large group measured by the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index, as they often ignore their own health and are 40 per cent more likely to suffer from a chronic health condition,” Ms Branch-Allen said.
“Tasmania has 73,800 family carers, which is nearly 15 percent of the population. They provide help and support to a family member or friend and many of them are chronically tired and desperately need to refresh with a day off or a period with no caring responsibilities.”
Ms Hey said Northgate recognised the hard work carers put in and wanted to give back to those who were always putting others before themselves.
“The special treatment doesn’t just stop there though – all Northgate shoppers will be invited to participate in free styling sessions with fashion guru Erin Wiss throughout the month of October,” she said.
“Customers who come into the centre during the campaign will also have the opportunity to jump in a photobooth and ‘snap their style’, with a chance to win assorted prizes, and shoppers who spend over $40 on apparel will also be rewarded with a free gift.
“The Northgate October Fashion Campaign allows everyday people to treat themselves, without breaking the bank, with the campaign designed to reassure shoppers when they buy with Northgate retailers they are buying smart, with the latest fashion trends and season styles.”
